Position Overview:

Builds new business in a specific geographic area. The Business Development Manager is responsible for converting customers by qualifying and identifying new leads and target customers.


Major Tasks and Responsibilities:

In addition to several of the general duties of a District Sales Manager, the Business Development Manager will stay focused as described below.

  • Primary focus is to convert customers and build new business
  • Role provides no existing accounts, Commission based bonus role
  • Works independently of the other sellers in the region and receives direction from RSM on which targets accounts to close
  • Develops new targets through active prospecting and cold calling activities
  • Analyzes market trends and sales data to identify market opportunities for future business.
  • Assist the Sales Leadership Team in identifying and accurately forecasting market share opportunities.
  • They must clearly and convincingly articulate the organization’s offerings and value proposition and overcome initial resistance from prospects.
  • Displays or demonstrates product, using samples or catalog, and explains features and attributes and advantages over competition.
  • Reviews market analyses to determine customer requirements, volume potential, competitive pricing.
  • Represents company at trade shows and association meetings to promote product.
  • Coordinates between customer service, technical service, engineering and other departments as appropriate.
  • Controls expenditures of personal geographic district to conform to budgetary requirements.
  • Provides input and implements annual new business sales plan for the territory, including sales strategy to meet the new business sales quotas established by the Director of Sales or Regional Sales Manager.
  • Manages and develops customer base through the effective use of Salesforce CRM. Identifies new business targets and effectively schedules touchpoints and selling opportunities.
  • Prepares monthly progress reports, monthly itinerary, weekly call reports and weekly expense reports in a timely manner and submits to Regional Sales Manager.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Regional Sales Manager or Vice President of Sales.


A sustained level of new business sales achievement is essential. Mechanical aptitude and personal computer skills are required. Sales success in a B2B environment where market growth and large customer conversion was the objective. Analytical thinking and strategic selling skills will be key. Familiarity with automated control systems, basic electricity, plumbing hydraulics and/or water chemistry is a plus. A broad knowledge of swimming pool equipment and Hayward’s products is a plus. Working knowledge of electronic chlorine generation, and solar, gas and electric heaters is a plus.

Must also possess a valid driver’s license and be able to drive long distances and travel by plane.


Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university preferred.
