As a Quantum computing specialist working within bp’s Digital Science & Engineering organization you will be accountable for the development of a diverse range of quantum algorithms on different hardware platforms. In your role you will work with subject matter experts in bp’s business groups, such as finance and trading, applied physics and chemistry, and production and operations to research and implement quantum computing solutions to exciting and computationally challenging problems. You will be expected to work closely with bp’s strategic partners in quantum computing, and interface with academics, research laboratories and start-ups to keep abreast of advancements in quantum computing hardware and quantum computing applications. You will continue to build on your deep technical expertise and established reputation in quantum computing, by conducting fundamental research and publishing in journals and conferences.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, maintain and improve implementations of quantum and associated classical algorithms.
- Support bp’s strategic research and development programs with deep subject matter expertise in quantum computing.
- Work with bp’s businesses to understand, evaluate and progress suitable applications of quantum computing.
- Interface with research labs, academic institutions and start-ups to establish connections and keep abreast of advancements in quantum hardware and software.
- Contribute to bp’s quantum computing strategy and digital technology future outlook.
- Mentor early career computer scientists and software engineers.
- Publish research in peer reviewed journals and top tier conferences.

Qualifications
- A PhD in computer science, physics, mathematics or chemistry with a focus on quantum computing preferred.
- Post-Doctoral experience preferred.
- A strong research track record in quantum computing, demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations.
- 2+ years of work experience developing quantum algorithms for quantum machine learning, quantum optimization, quantum chemistry or quantum error correction.
- Strong understanding of quantum algorithms and common techniques (like quantum phase estimation, quantum amplitude amplifications, quantum Fourier transformation).
- Strong programming skills (Python, C/C++) and experience with Unix/Linux and HPC environments.
- Some experience with software development version control, documentation and testing.
- Some experience with quantum software development kits like Qiskit, t/ket, PennyLane, Q#, other.
- No prior experience in energy industry required.
