Position Summary
The EHS/HS Substitute will assist the classroom staff in implementing a structured classroom on an as-needed basis. The substitute is responsible for aiding an EHS/HS Teacher in the implementation of the daily schedule and routine, leading activities, ensuring safety and security of ren, and supervision of ren. The substitute will develop nurturing relationships with the ren within a context of consistency and structured routines. Assist teacher in promoting school readiness and setting appropriate goals that address the social-emotional, cognitive, language/literacy, perpetual motor and physical development, and approaches to learning. Assist teacher to develop individual learning goals. Assist teacher in successfully implementing strategies that include positive reinforcement, active supervision, and parent and/or family engagement.
The substitute must be able to work a flexible schedule to include different locations as needed. Substitutes may work an average of 25 hours per week. Must not exceed more than 29 hours per week. Must be available for assignment. If the Substitute declines an assignment 3 times it will be considered a voluntary resignation.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands
The work environment is that which is typical of a classroom setting. The noise level is usually moderate to loud. Working in a classroom setting requires the ability to maintain physical condition and stamina appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include stationary positioning for extended periods of time, interacting with ren at the ’s eye level (which includes floor activities), etc. Frequently requires lifting boxes of supplies, cots, equipment, and occasional adjustments of furniture. Occasional use of upper extremities to press against equipment, furniture, etc., between 30-50 pounds with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward, or outward. Requires occasional use of upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, haul or tug objects between 30-50 pounds in a sustained motion. Raising objects between 30-50 pounds from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position is occasionally required.
Regularly required to use upper extremities including reaching with hands and arms to raise ren from a lower to a higher position. Regularly required to bend legs to rest on the knees, bend the body downward and forward by bending legs and spine (at the waist), move about on hands and knees or hands and feet. Frequently required to communicate information or instructions to ren, parents, peers, management, etc. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Use of personal computing equipment, telephone, multi-functioning printer, and calculator. Working evenings, weekends, and holidays as required in order to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of the position. Normal to heavy travel is required to attend activities such as meetings, classes, and workshops in and out of the service area. Must be able to travel by air as necessary to attend training, conference, and related activities.

Job Function
1. Assist in the development and implementation of a structured classroom environment.
2. Assist in maintaining constant supervision of clients.
3. Supervise classroom routines including toileting meals, diaper changing, and daily activities.
4. Work with EHS/HS staff in maintaining a safe and healthy environment for infants and toddlers.
5. Assist in keeping the classroom organized and arranged appropriately.
6. Ensure materials are available for ren when needed to carry out activities.
7. Model acceptable behaviors and utilize behavior management techniques in the classroom.
8. Assist EHS/HS teacher in maintaining good communication with parents/legal guardians.
9. Maintain a well-organized, safe, and attractive classroom environment conducive to the optimal growth and development of ren.
10. Supports the Social and Emotional development of ren.
11. Observe each daily to assess skills, interests, and needs and use this information to facilitate learning and growth.
12. Assist in providing ren with play activities designed to encourage ren’s curiosity, exploration, and problem-solving.
13. Ensure each ’s personal hygiene by changing clothing when necessary, and teaching them handwashing skills.
14. Assist in cleaning and organizing the care rooms at the end of the day.
15. Assist the teacher in conducting home visits and parent conferences and work cooperatively and effectively as a team member.
16. Assist teacher in planning and implementing the daily program of activities based on principles of development and in accordance with the program’s curriculum. Assist in creating interactive parent- activity materials.
17. Supervise ren at all times.
18. Establish a positive relationship with each ’s family and share information about the ’s day at the Center.
19. Attend training, workshops, and seminars as requested and participate in required staff meetings and staff development as requested.
20. Communicate with staff members regarding clients' issues and parent/legal guardian communications.
21. Able to travel for business-related activities.
22. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance in compliance with AVANCE-Houston policies and/or procedures
23. Perform other duties as requested by the Center Administrator

Special Skills
1. Sustained concentration and ability to handle multiple tasks often simultaneously.
2. Knowledge and background of pre-school ren.
3. Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
4. Bilingual in English and Spanish (oral and written) may be required at some centers.
5. Demonstrated success in handling confidential information.
6. Ability to follow the daily classroom schedule.
7. Ability to successfully engage with ren and parents.
8. Ability to handle stressful and sensitive situations in a professional manner.
9. Ability to work independently and maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality.
10. Ability to exercise tact and discretion in all interactions.
11. Ability to perform duties and adapt to flexible work schedules as established by management
12. Able to lift and/or carry 30 to 50 lbs.
13. Office equipment - 10 key calculator, fax, copier, audiovisual equipment. Intermediate math skills required.
14. Intermediate to advanced computer skills in the use of Windows, Internet Search Engines, Microsoft Office, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Agency Software and Programs, etc.
15. Must have dependable transportation, valid driver’s license, proof of current insurance coverage, and be insurable by AVANCE’s guidelines.
